Eight Students Chosen for Exposures

Congratulations to the following students for their acceptance into the Exposures publication:

Seniors: Saralyn MacKinnon, Rachel Plamondon, Bradford Schaub.

Juniors: Morgan Furore, Claire Garthe, Lindsey Korson.

Sophomores: Luke Kermode, Chelsey Sawallich.

The Exposures open house will be on Friday, April 30th from 5 to 8 pm at the Old Art Building in Leland.  Come see their work on display and enjoy the reception.

Leelanau County Students Present “Showcase Leelanau”

February 9th, 2010

Students from across Leelanau County will come together Saturday, February 20th, at the Leland Old Art Building to present Showcase Leelanau. The event is designed to highlight the fine arts programs in the county schools, and will feature musical performances and student art work from each of the participating schools: Glen Lake, Leland, Northport, St. Mary, and Suttons Bay. The event will conclude with the unveiling of a new, collaborative piece of art designed and created by the area art students.

The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Leland Old Art Building is located at 111 Main Street in Leland. Admission is free.

Rachel Amalfitano Advances to the State Solo & Ensemble Festival

Congratulations to sophomore Rachel Amalfitano who received a Division I rating at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association District Solo & Ensemble Festival this past weekend for her solo performance! Rachel advances to the State Solo & Ensemble Festival the weekend of April 16!!

Congratulations to senior Rachel Zemanek who was a first time solo performer at the District Festival this year. Rachel received a Division II rating – she missed advancing to states by only 1 point!!

Congratulations to eighth graders Maeve Alflen and Megan Popp who received a Division I rating for their duet performance. (Only high school students are permitted to advance to the state level.)

Way to go girls – you all did an awesome job!!

Homecoming King & Queen Crowned

31 BPA Students Advancing to States

January 15th, 2010

Every January, St. Mary High School students compete against 20 other schools plus 5 career tech centers in our region at the Business Professionals of America Regional Leadership Conference. The largest of these schools, Midland HS, has over 1700 students and the smallest of these, Breckenridge HS, has 247 students. St. Mary has 70 high school students. Thanks to the excellent leadership of advisor Mrs. Mary Ann Korson, St. Mary School students consistently place in the top ten with approximately 40-45% of those who compete at the regional level advance to the state level! Forty-two students (60% of our high school) competed at BPA Regional Leadership Conference last weekend at CMU! Thank you to our parents and community members who help the students prepare: Mary Dingrando, Bill Feurtges, Nancy Keilty, Paula Korson, Pete Miller, Nancy Moore, Bob Orent, Lori Schaub, & Bob Steiner. *Thirty-one of these students (74% of those who competed) qualified to compete at the state level in Grand Rapids, March 18-21!

Ten Students Inducted Into the National Honor Society

December 3rd, 2009

The 2009-10 Faculty Council of the St. Mary School Honor Society nominated ten high school students for membership in the school chapter. To be eligible, students must be in 10th-12th grades, have a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or better, and meet high standards of leadership, service, and character. Leadership is based on the student’s participation in community or school activities, including holding a position of leadership. To meet the service requirement the student must have been active in service projects in the school and community. Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and loyalty to the school and to school policies.

NHS Inductees

New members, pictured from left: Luke Kermode, Kevin Schaub, Caleb Korson, Elsa Finch, Ashley Grant, Sarah Popp-Trevino, Brooke Fortner, Layton Korson, Aaron Helwig, and Michael Pendergast were inducted at a ceremony following the School Mass on December 2nd. This year’s officers are: Kayla Schaub, president; Bradford Schaub, vice president; Morgan Furore, secretary; and Alissa Boone, treasurer. The now twenty-one members of the St. Mary chapter (also including Margaret Barley, Emily Boss, Jenny Kalchik, Christy Miller, Myra Schaub, Gabrielle Kuznicki, and Elise Tarsa) provide service to the school on a regular basis, including office coverage during lunch. They also volunteer at the FIA Holiday Store each December.

Peace Poster Contest Winners Announced

Congratulations to all 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the Annual Lions’ Peace Poster contest. The theme this year is “The Power of Peace.” Students were asked to arrange symbol(s) that represent this year’s theme with the design principals in mind: pattern, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, and unity. 1st place went to Ariel Couturier, 2nd place Mary Rexroat, 3rd place Christina Amalfitano, 4th place Drew Pobuda, 5th place Megan Popp, 6th place Shayna Sumner. Honorable Mention went to Hannah Weber, Maeve Alflen, and Kristen Falkiewicz. Ariel’s poster will be entered in the regional competition, the winner of which advances to the state level.
